    Taberna da Rua das Flores

The tomatoes taste like tomatoes. That doesn’t sound like much, but just remember the current state of the world:

We have presidents that are not a bit presidential. We have an near infinite number of milks that are not milk. Homeowners build gardens without a single plant in them. Offices should look like homes and homes are offices. People call democracies dictatorships while they admire real dictators. We breed dogs so that they’re not dog-sized anymore. G-Classes are never driven on dirt roads. Everyone tries to look like Kylie Jenner while even Kylie Jenner doesn’t look like Kylie Jenner.

Tomato with salt. This is a dish here at Taberna da Rue das Flores. It’s simple, but it really is a big deal. Because the simple stuff has to be good. No place to hide. And the tomato variety from the south of Portugal was crazy good. This is one end of the spectrum here at this small restaurant. The other one is surprising never-tasted-before flavours. A pork neck grilled in sea lettuce, a burned scallop, a portugese version of Okonomiyaki. This is not an “easy” restaurant you can blindly recommend to everyone visiting Lisbon. You might need to wait an hour for a table. You need to have a sense of appreciation for the super-simple and the complex. You need to have taste to taste the magic of Taberna da Rua das Flores.

Perfect for: Foodies (even though i hate the word)
