    Bistro 100 Maneiras

I suck at surfing. I also suck at kitesurfing. I tried both, it’s not that i have the feeling i could never learn it, but i quickly realized it would take me a long, long time to master it up to that skill level that it would be finally fun. Well, I never had a deep desire for both sports, I didn’t have posters of Kelly Slater in my room, I never had long hair or a shark tooth necklace or ankle chains. So my disability to do both things is not soul-crushing, i just always wanted to have a sport that gives me a reason to travel to places. Fortunately for my self-entertainment and unfortunately for my waistline, the activity of eating took this place. And much like a good surfer, I don’t care for what “the man” says, about the standards some kind of society dictates me. I won’t follow a man-made, made-up invention like “the clock”, I only go with the (culinary) waves. Which sometimes means i’m eating ceviche for breakfast. Like in the Bistro 100 Maneiras. Well, thanks to the addition of orange, it was quite fruity, so you could say at that moment it was kind of a fishy fruit bowl, a somehow acceptable breakfast by the rules of society. Appropriate or not, it was fucking delicious, just like the equally inadequate dry aged sirloin with foie gras mushroom and a deep-fried egg. So if you’re in Portugal and are a fucking surf looser like me who can’t kickflip a-breaks or grind along the channel or however they call that stuff they’re doing out there, just hang loose in Bistro 100 Maneiras.

Perfect for: fine dining, late “breakfast” (they open at 12:00)

    Taberna da Rua das Flores

The tomatoes taste like tomatoes. That doesn’t sound like much, but just remember the current state of the world:

We have presidents that are not a bit presidential. We have an near infinite number of milks that are not milk. Homeowners build gardens without a single plant in them. Offices should look like homes and homes are offices. People call democracies dictatorships while they admire real dictators. We breed dogs so that they’re not dog-sized anymore. G-Classes are never driven on dirt roads. Everyone tries to look like Kylie Jenner while even Kylie Jenner doesn’t look like Kylie Jenner.

Tomato with salt. This is a dish here at Taberna da Rue das Flores. It’s simple, but it really is a big deal. Because the simple stuff has to be good. No place to hide. And the tomato variety from the south of Portugal was crazy good. This is one end of the spectrum here at this small restaurant. The other one is surprising never-tasted-before flavours. A pork neck grilled in sea lettuce, a burned scallop, a portugese version of Okonomiyaki. This is not an “easy” restaurant you can blindly recommend to everyone visiting Lisbon. You might need to wait an hour for a table. You need to have a sense of appreciation for the super-simple and the complex. You need to have taste to taste the magic of Taberna da Rua das Flores.

Perfect for: Foodies (even though i hate the word)
